Under the Deep Green Sea

I recently read Marion Coutts’s What Did the Deep Sea Say? (Fern Press, 2026), after seeing a piece in the Observer a little while ago. The book is a meditation on grief that uses the natural world as a mirror and highly worth reading for that alone.

However, I am more interested in the pages on Marie Tharp and her collaborative work on mapping the Atlantic using sonic methods – sonic cartography of the unseen underwater world and the Mid Atlantic Ridge. The piece is not long but it does show the use of sonic methods at scale.
